Research & Teaching

Teaching at the FP.

The Feliciana Preserve has been a venue for many class field trips by LSU students from Departments of Entomology, Biological Sciences, and School of Renewable Natural Resources. Students from other universities in various courses have also visited the FP (e.g. Evergreen State University). For more information about visiting the FP, contact us (felicianapreserve@gmail.com).

Research at the FP.

Several Ph.D. and M.S. projects and surveys have been conducted at FP involving vascular plants, snakes, moths, spiders, beetles, ants, litter insects, and birds.

Continuing research projects, especially those focused on beetles (Coleoptera), are regularly conducted in the preserve. Several recently described species of beetles (e.g., Endomychidae; Micropsephodes lundgreni) have been discovered and additional rare or undescribed species are known to occur there (e.g., Staphylinidae; Micropeplus spp.). New species described from the preserve include:

Batrisodes dorotheae Ferro and Carlton (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Pselaphinae). Named after Feliciana Preserve founder Dorothy Prowell.

Anillinus felicianus Sokolov (Coleoptera: Carabidae). Discovered by Brittany Owens and Chris Carlton, currently known from two soil samples from the Feliciana Preserve.

  • Publications.

From ecology to taxonomy, research at the FPLA explores a number of facets of the natural world and has resulted in 15 scientific publications in referred journals. Find a list of the publications resulting from research supported by the FP here:

  • Current Research.

Current research supported by the FP include an ongoing project by LSU grad student Garret Rhyne. This project examines migratory habits of Swainson’s Warblers, a bird species found on the preserve. For more information on this project, click here:
